Questions and Answers

Q. What is a Board of Governors?
A. The Board of Governors consists of a group of interested people, some are employed by the school and others are volunteers. The headteacher and the management team run the school on a day-to-day basis, the strategic direction of the school is shared with the governors.

Q. What are the functions of the Board of Governors?
A. The Board of Governors has the following core functions:

Establishing the strategic direction, by:
  • Setting the visions, values and objectives for the school
  • Agreeing the school improvement strategy with priorities and targets
  • Meeting statutory duties
Ensuring accountability, by:
  • Appointing the headteacher
  • Monitoring progress towards targets
  • Performance managing the headteacher
  • Engaging with stakeholders
  • Contributing to school self-evaluation
Ensuring financial probity, by:
  • Setting the budget
  • Monitoring spending against the budget
  • Ensuring value for money is obtained
  • Ensuring risks to the organisation are managed
Q. What do the Governors do?
A. The formal work and decision making of the Board of Governors is undertaken at Board meetings held twice a term. There are also delegated committees, namely Finance and Premises committee; Curriculum and AEN committee; Personnel, Pay and Performance Management committee that also meet twice a term. In addition there are sometimes working parties formed to undertake specific tasks.

Governors have specific interests linked to the School Development Plan and other areas such as health and safety. Governors also visit the school during the school day and make sure that there is evidence of the school delivering its School Development Plan. These visits are reported to the Board of Governors.

In July 2016 Mrs Gloria Cawood resigned as a Co-opted Governor as she was re-locating away from the local area. Mrs Cawood had been a school governor since November 2013 and had served on the Curriculum and AEN committee as well as the Personnel, Pay and Headteacher’s Performance Management Committee with special responsibility for AEN.

In September 2016 Mr Nigel Purchon resigned as a LA Governor having served as a school governor since September 2004. Mr Purchon was Vice-Chair of the Governors and had served on the Finance and Premises committee and the Curriculum and AEN committee, as well as the Personnel, Pay and Headteacher’s Performance Management Committee with special responsibility for Curriculum.

In June 2017 Mrs Vicki Taylor resigned as a Co-Opted Governor having served as a school governor since January 2007. Mrs Taylor was Chair of the Governors and had served on the Finance and Premises committee and the Curriculum and AEN committee, as well as the Personnel, Pay and Headteacher’s Performance Management Committee with special responsibility for Child Protection.
